Why matrimonial sites charge ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 to talk — and what a one-time ₹99 changes
Most large matrimonial sites are free to join but charge ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 per plan to see contact details or send messages, and the plan expires. Sanjogmate charges one joining fee — ₹99 in India, about £5, $5, C$7 or AED 19 elsewhere — paid once, which funds a human ID check and then opens every profile and unlimited messaging for life.
How "free to join" actually works
You create a profile for nothing. You browse for nothing. Then you find someone, click "send message", and meet the paywall: a monthly or quarterly plan, priced against your hope. When the plan expires, contact details disappear again. The business model is not matchmaking; it is renewal.
Three side effects follow. First, the site has no reason to remove fake profiles quickly — they inflate the count that sells plans. Second, verification is optional, because mandatory checks would slow sign-ups. Third, "featured" placement is sold, so the profiles you see first are the ones that paid most, not the ones that fit best.
What a small, one-time, identity-tied fee changes
- Fraud economics flip. A fraudster running a hundred profiles has to pay a hundred times, each with a traceable payment record and a real ID. Almost none bother.
- No reason to keep fakes. The site earns nothing from inflated numbers, so it can remove bad accounts on the first confirmed report.
- Nothing to sell later. No boosts, no contact credits, no "premium" badge that means "paid".
- Verification becomes mandatory, because the fee is what pays for it.
Why not free, then?
Because free has a cost someone else pays. A free site fills with fraudsters and nobody funds the reviewer. The honest position is not "marriage should be free" but "marriage should not be a subscription". One fee, once, priced to your country so it is nothing to you and something to a scammer.
What you should still pay attention to
A fee does not make people honest; it makes fake accounts expensive. The identity check confirms who someone is, not what they intend. Never send money to a member for any reason, keep early conversations on the site, and involve your family before you exchange numbers.
