How to write a matrimonial profile that serious families actually reply to

Sanjogmate Guides··5 min read
Short answer

The matrimonial profiles that get serious replies are specific and honest: two or three plain paragraphs about who you are, a clear statement of where you plan to live and work in five years, and a concrete description of the partner you want. Vague profiles ("good family, well settled") are skipped because they give the reader nothing to say yes to.

The three fields that matter

About us

Write the way you would speak to an aunt you like. Not "I am a simple, family-oriented person" — everyone is. Instead: "Iyer family, Carnatic singing since I was six, still performing twice a year. Straightforward person; I say what I think, which my colleagues appreciate more than my relatives do." That paragraph tells a reader six things and gives them three to ask about.

Future planning

This is the field most people leave blank and the field families most want to read. Where will you live in five years? Will you keep working after marriage, after children? Will parents live with you? "Finishing my licensure in two years, staying in the Gulf for now, open to Canada later if the family agrees." Every sentence there prevents a failed match later.

What you want

Be specific enough to be disagreed with. "Practising but not rigid, with his own work, honest about money, comfortable with a wife who works late in deadline weeks. Age 27 to 34." A reader who does not fit will move on, which is exactly the point. The reader who does fit knows immediately.

Lines that get skipped

If a parent is writing

Say so — "profile managed by mother" — and write in your child's voice as far as you can, then let them edit it. A profile that sounds like a job advertisement gets job-advertisement replies.

Photos

One clear face photo without sunglasses, one full-length, one that shows your life — a kitchen, a gurdwara, a hiking trail. Skip heavy filters; the verification face-match and the first video call will both reveal them anyway.

Details that belong on the profile, not in the third phone call: height and weight, diet, marital status (say "divorced" or "widowed" at the start, not the end), mother tongue, and whether you expect a simple or a large ceremony.
